About the works

ISLANDS

ISLANDS

Rising from the sea, islands have always triggered our imaginations. They are as miniature worlds from paradise to refuge, to a prison for the damned. An island is a place where land meets sea, where tides rise and fall, giving and taking.

Islands come to formation through opposing forces. They are vulnerable and at the same time rocks in oceans of surging energy.

ISLANDS

In these sculptures the roots of the islands are made visible. The root tells the story of the beginning of the island, there is movement from darkness to light. In the sculptures the roots act as a base for the island formations. The waterline forms the line of suspension. In the base the unknown, the invisible is partially revealed. Rock, root and antler formations recall myths, memories, mind states and the power in the expressions of nature.

ARCHIPELAGO

The sculpture "Archipelago" in its clarity and soberness reflects a Japanese karesansui garden with its rocks on a bed of raked gravel symbolizing the unchanging eternal and the all embracing emptiness in a mind free from thought. These island sculptures like zen gardens inspire meditation and reflection.

DANCE OF THE ISLANDS

DANCE OF THE ISLANDS

Some island sculptures appear to be open whilst others hermetically closed. Some as in this series appear to be moving or dancing in contrast to the eternal unchanging nature of the bigger sculptures. In these small works the subconscious mirrors the unknowable and unreachable side of nature.

FANDANGO

FANDANGO

The title of this series 'Fandango' gives an indication of what these works mean to me. Fandango is a Spanish dance with powerful attitude where the partners do not touch each other.

The individual dancers create magic arising from their passions and internal struggles.

ICE ISLANDS

ICE ISLANDS

As with icebergs the greater part lies under water.
